India's presence in the Asia Cup has been a testament to their cricketing prowess and consistency. From the inaugural tournament in 1984 to their latest triumph in 2025, India has been a dominant force in the competition.

Key Highlights from India's Asia Cup Campaigns

  • 1984: Won the inaugural Asia Cup under Sunil Gavaskar, beating Sri Lanka by 54 runs.

  • 1988: Lifted the trophy in Bangladesh under Dilip Vengsarkar, defeating Sri Lanka.

  • 1990–91 & 1995: Back-to-back titles under Mohammad Azharuddin, cementing dominance in the 90s.

  • 2010: Victory under MS Dhoni, defeating Sri Lanka in the final.

Interestingly, India have boycotted the Asia Cup before, but it was not because of Pakistan.

  • India has boycotted the Asia Cup only once, in 1986, when the government barred participation in Sri Lanka due to the civil war. Defending champions India withdrew, Bangladesh filled in, and Sri Lanka beat Pakistan in the final.
  • Pakistan skipping the 1990 edition in India over political tensions.
  • The 1993 tournament being cancelled altogether due to India–Pakistan hostilities.
